Importance of Increasing the Vocabulary For a Fiction Author
Authors usually have vocabulary that they use on a regular basis. For you to have a big number of words to choose from when writing, you need to learn other vocabularies. It is best to use verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives that best bring out the writing if you are a fiction writer. Good writing is not only how well you put the words together, it is also about the words themselves. When a novel you are reading is engaging, you will easily get into it. Reread the novel again after reading and enjoying it. The point of this is to analyse how the work has been written. The aspect of writing is where you should focus on, they include how the plot and characters were developed and the technical aspects like grammar. Be mindful of the fact that American and British authors write differently.
It could be their punctuation, spelling and the difference in the words that are being used. While Americans use among, the British use the word amongst. It is important that you stick to the standard rules when writing for American readers or for British readers.
Fiction authors can and should expand the base of the vocabulary that they use. This can be done anytime when they are reading another author’s work. A new vocabulary that you come across should be noted. Most authors do not do this even though it is general knowledge. Besides it being a logical thing to do, it is one way of building your vocabulary. Consider getting a notebook or use any other means you desire to make categories that suits your needs. When people are talking or when there is a dialogue on the TV and when you are reading you should be keen to listen. You should take note of the verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives or any compound nouns being used. You will be amazed about the words you already use, the ones you didn’t know about and those you never thought of using. Keeping a list of the words or phrases that your characters might occasionally use is important. For example for the eyes, use a phrase like ‘her eyes surveyed the room’.
You will be able to describe vividly what is going on internally and externally regarding your characters if you take notes of such words and phrases. Such a list will help you rephrase your words and write authentic and creative vocabulary. Use this list when making your draft.
